AAMI Foundation / Institute for Technology in Health Care Clinical Application Award

Interoperability and the Integrated Clinical Environment

Julian M. Goldman, MD recognized for Excellence in Medical Technology

clinical engineering logoARLINGTON, VA—The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) has selected Julian M. Goldman, MD, as the winner of the 2009 AAMI Foundation/Institute for Technology in Health Care Clinical Application Award. This award is given to an individual or group that has applied innovative clinical engineering practices or principles in order to solve one or more significant clinical patient care problems or challenges facing a patient population, community, or group.

Goldman recognized early the importance of interoperability among the increasing multitude of medical devices. He parlayed that vision into groundbreaking work such as founding the medical device plug-and-play interoperability program, leading to the development of a new standard for the “Integrated Clinical Environment,” and the Operating Room of the Future, a project that explores new technologies and systems of patient care.

Goldman is a practicing anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, and currently serves as director of interoperability for the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT), a nonprofit consortium of Boston-area healthcare and technology institutions led by Partners Healthcare.

“Julian is a pioneer in and evangelist for the use of interoperability to create smarter alarms and safety interlocked systems of equipment,” says Raymond Zambuto, CCE, president of Technology in Medicine.

“This award recognizes the importance of the role of medical device interoperability in improving the safety and efficiency of patient care,” Goldman says. “I accept it with gratitude to our many collaborators whose commitment has progressed this work and moved it closer to the tipping point of adoption.”

AAMI recognized Goldman for his achievement at the Dwight E. Harkin, MD Memorial Lecture and Awards Luncheon on Sunday, June 7, during AAMI’s Annual Conference & Expo in Baltimore, MD.
