ithc hiv health careA seminar series focusing on the role of technology in HIV care and treatment, is supported by a special grant from The Institute for Technology in Health Care. The series is cosponsored by The George Washington University HIV/AIDS Institute and The Department of Prevention and Community Health.  This series began in 2007 and continued into 2008.  It addresses topics intended to enhance the continuing medical education of physicians, nurses, and students treating patients with HIV/AIDS.

January 21, 2009 Seminar:

HIV Disease Management: Current status, progress, and remaining challenges

Dr. Paul Volberding, Professor and Vice Chair at the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco and Chief of Medical Service at the SF Veterans Affairs Medical Center, will talk about HIV disease management with a focus on the current status of disease management, areas for progress and remaining challenges that need to be addressed. A panel of local experts will then discuss their experiences with HIV disease management.

Current Status of HIV Vaccine Research - Where do we go from here?

Two leading experts in the field of HIV vaccine development - Dr. Carl Dieffenbach, Director of the Division of AIDS at NIAID, and Dr. Barney S. Graham, Chief of the Viral Pathogenesis Laboratory and Chief of the Clinical Trials Core through the Vaccine Research Center at NIAID - presented the science behind the current approaches to the development of an HIV vaccine, an overview of the recent Merck vaccine trial results, and a discussion on where the field stands now. A panel of local experts then talked about the implications of HIV vaccine research for Metro DC area clinics, health centers, and patients.
